Duke Reloads After a Shocking ACC Title Run, With a New Quarterback and a Rebuilt Front Seven

Duke authored one of the 2025 season's better surprises, going 9-5 (6-2 ACC) and claiming its first ACC championship since 1989. The Blue Devils backed into the title game on tiebreakers after losing five regular-season contests, then won it in overtime over Virginia before topping Arizona State in the Sun Bowl. Fueling the run was the league's top scoring offense at 34.6 points per game, along with program highs for points and total touchdowns.

The offseason handed second-year coach Manny Diaz (18-9 at Duke, and rewarded with an extension through 2031) a painful reset. Quarterback Darian Mensah, who reset the school single-season touchdown record, took his talents to Miami on the final day of the transfer portal window, a blow no staff could have planned for. Diaz did well to keep strength coach Dave Feeley in the building, and the belief inside the program remains high, but replacing that production will define the season.
