Draft Profile: Bio
Anthony Smith made 64 tackles and 9.5 sacks as a senior at Shippensburg Area Senior High School in Pennsylvania and was named PennLive's Boys Athlete of the Year before signing with Minnesota, choosing the Gophers out of central Pennsylvania.

Smith redshirted in 2022 as a freshman, made 15 tackles and a sack in 2023 and tied for the team lead with six sacks in 2024. He broke out in 2025 with 17.5 tackles for loss and 44 pressures, leading the Big Ten in sacks for much of the season and earning first-team All-Big Ten honors. He had 1.5 sacks and four hurries against Rutgers, and Minnesota sacked Nebraska's Dylan Raiola nine times in a 24-6 win. He was the defensive MVP of the Rate Bowl win over New Mexico, with six tackles, two sacks and two pass breakups, including a stop on a fake punt.

Smith announced on ESPN after the bowl game that he would return, saying he had decided early in December and would not want to miss his final season for the world, even as other programs reportedly offered large sums to lure him into the portal. He has three sacks and 28 pressures in eight games for a 5-3 Minnesota team, and defensive coordinator Danny Collins has said he can change a game within one play.
Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Generated 44 pressures and 17.5 tackles for loss in 2025
  • First-team All-Big Ten and Rate Bowl defensive MVP in 2025
  • Big, powerful frame with the size to rush from inside
  • Converts a bull rush into push that walks tackles into the pocket
  • Has 28 pressures in eight games this season
  • Reliable finisher, with two missed tackles this season
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • Sack production has dropped to three this season
  • Average bend limits him against quicker NFL tackles
  • Modest run defender for a player his size, with 10 stops this season
  • Missed eight tackles in 2025 despite strong overall production
Scouting Report: Summary
Smith is a big, powerful edge rusher who broke out in 2025 with 17.5 tackles for loss and 44 pressures, earning first-team All-Big Ten honors and leading the conference in sacks for much of the season. He converts a bull rush into push that walks tackles back into the pocket, he has the size to rush from inside on passing downs, and he closed his season as the defensive MVP of the Rate Bowl. He also tied for the team lead with six sacks in 2024, so his production is not a one-year spike.

His 2026 season has been quieter in the box score but steady on tape. He has 28 pressures in eight games, a pace close to last season's, but only three sacks, and he has missed just two tackles. He turned down reported offers to enter the portal so he could return to Minnesota, and Danny Collins has said he can change a game within one play. Minnesota is 5-3 entering November.

However, he does not win with bend. His timed speed is good rather than rare, and his ability to flatten around the corner is average, so quicker NFL tackles can ride him past the quarterback. He is a modest run defender for his size, with 10 stops this season, and he missed eight tackles in 2025. Teams will want to see more of his pressures turn into sacks over the final month. A strong finish would also ease questions about whether his 2025 sack total was a peak.

Overall, Smith is a powerful, productive pass rusher whose size gives him the flexibility to play end or slide inside. He projects as a fourth-round edge rusher who can start at base end, with the floor of a rotational pass rusher. His ability to rush from inside on passing downs adds value for teams that rotate their linemen.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance. For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
