A Canadian and the son of CFL linebacker Daved Benefield, Benefield was a 1,400-yard receiver at Crean Lutheran in Irvine, California, catching 20 touchdowns as a senior before signing with Boise State as a three-star and converting to safety.He recorded 46 tackles as a freshman in 2023, then started all fourteen games as a sophomore in 2024 with 82 tackles, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries for a College Football Playoff team.
Benefield led the secondary again in 2025, posting 105 tackles, three pass breakups, two interceptions, a forced fumble and 30 run stops across fourteen starts. He earned first-team All-Mountain West and conference title game MVP honors before transferring to LSU as one of the more experienced safeties in the portal. The 105-tackle senior year ranked among the Mountain West's best, capping a three-year arc from high school receiver to all-conference safety.
