Jaylen McClain grew up in Rahway, New Jersey, and played his high school ball at Seton Hall Prep in West Orange, where he was a three-year starter, a two-way contributor at safety and wide receiver, and a track athlete with an 11.06 in the 100 meters. As a senior in 2023, he racked up 126 tackles, three fumble recoveries, a blocked punt, and a blocked field goal, earning first-team all-conference and all-state honors. He committed to Ohio State over Notre Dame, USC, Oregon, and Penn State, enrolling early in January 2024 as a four-star recruit ranked No. 3 in New Jersey.McClain played 15 games as a true freshman on the 2024 national championship team, logging 110 defensive snaps and over 200 special teams plays while recording 15 tackles and a pass breakup. In 2025 he won the starting job opposite Caleb Downs and started all 14 games, finishing with 53 tackles (42 solo), three pass deflections, and a third-team All-Big Ten selection while playing 708 defensive snaps.
Through two seasons, McClain has appeared in 29 games with 15 starts and logged over 800 career defensive snaps. He is an OSU Scholar-Athlete majoring in sport industry and is expected to be a defensive leader for the Buckeyes in 2026.
