Draft Profile: Bio
Ashton Gillotte, a defensive end from Louisville, has made significant strides since arriving as a three-star recruit from Boca Raton, Florida. At Boca Raton High School, Gillotte was a four-year starter and two-time team captain, leading his team to a state championship game appearance and earning all-county honors in 2019. He committed to Louisville over offers from several other programs, including Duke, Maryland, and Vanderbilt.
At Louisville, Gillotte's production increased each season. As a freshman in 2021, he recorded 19 tackles, 8.0 tackles for loss, and 4.0 sacks. His sophomore year saw improvement with 23 tackles, 7.0 tackles for loss, and 6.0 sacks. Gillotte's breakout junior season in 2023 was his most impressive, as he led the ACC with 11.0 sacks while adding 14.5 tackles for loss, 45 total tackles, and three forced fumbles.
Gillotte's dominant 2023 performance earned him First-Team All-ACC honors and Second-Team All-American selections from Walter Camp, USA TODAY, Sports Illustrated, and The Athletic. He was also named to the ACC All-Academic team and selected as a first-team CSC Academic All-American. Gillotte enters his senior year ranked 10th in Louisville history with 22.0 career sacks.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Made Bruce Feldman's Freak's List - ranked #58. He wrote "The 6-2 Gillotte has added a dozen pounds or so and is now up to 276 but still has hit 19.9 mph on the GPS and vertical-jumped 36 inches. He power-cleans 390, but strength coach Ben Sowders said he could probably do 405. “He’s so explosive.”"
- High-motor player with exceptional hand usage, consistently swatting away blockers and winning with technique
- Versatile defender capable of lining up both on the edge and interior of the defensive line
- Impressive burst off the snap, allowing him to threaten tackles and generate consistent pressure
- Strong upper body and ability to hold the point of attack against the run
- Productive pass rusher, leading the ACC with 11 sacks in 2023 and generating 59 total pressures
- Instinctive counter moves and solid overall hand usage when rushing the passer
- Relentless pursuit and second-effort player who impacts games with hustle plays
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Lacks ideal length for an edge defender, potentially limiting his ability to set the edge consistently
- Can play with high pad level at times, negating his leverage and power at the point of attack
- Not an elite bend-and-corner pass rusher, relying more on power and technique than flexibility
- Still developing a full arsenal of counter moves to complement his initial pass rush plan
- May lack the ideal lateral quickness to be a consistent chase-and-tackle player in space
Scouting Report: Summary
Gillotte projects as a high-motor edge defender with day-two draft potential. His hand usage and ability to rush from multiple alignments will intrigue NFL scouts. While he may not have elite bend or length, Gillotte's production and technical refinement make him an attractive prospect for teams running multiple fronts.
At the next level, Gillotte profiles as a rotational player who can contribute immediately in sub-packages. His strong run defense and relentless pass rush should translate well to the pro game. However, he'll need to expand his pass-rush arsenal and play with better leverage to become a full-time starter.
Gillotte's ceiling will depend on how well he can refine his technique and maximize his athleticism. If he continues to develop, he could become a solid NFL starter within his first few seasons. His floor appears to be a high-effort rotational player who can impact games with his motor and versatility. Expect Gillotte to make an impact on special teams early while he develops into a more complete defensive end.
