Scouting Report: Strengths
- He’s a high-motor player, and Sewell shows good enough hand use, as well as a tight spin move, to win as an edge rusher.
- Sewell has good quickness and an excellent understanding of angles, often beating blockers to the spot.
- Made Bruce Feldman's Freak's List - ranked #42. He wrote, "Sewell, a former high school quarterback, also had 8.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, five pass breakups and two forced fumbles. The 6-2, 260-pound junior has great movement skills, topping out at 20.85 mph on the GPS. He also bench pressed 425 this offseason, did 655 pounds on the sumo deadlift and power-cleaned 345."
- Super highly ranked recruit coming out of college who's got football in his blood his big brother is Penei (Detroit Lions offensive tackle)
- Sewel is a classic throwback style middle linebacker - who has the demeanor to be the QB of the defense
- He can be used as a rangy run defender inside, instinctive when it comes to locating the ball with the quickness to get to it before blockers can react at the second level.
- He combines the athleticism of a chase-and-tackle defender and the toughness and physicality of a classic 4-3 Mike.
- Good closing speed with long arms to drag down quarterbacks and running backs.
- Is elite an interior pass rusher - has forced a total 36 QB hurries over the past two years
- Sewell has the strong core and powerful hands to shed blockers, and he shows excellent instincts with the ability to quickly locate the ball.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Was one of the highest-rated prospects heading into the 2022 season - but he had a major down year and disappointed
- As good as Sewell is attacking downhill, he can get overaggressive and overrun plays, opening up cutback lanes for counter runs.
- As explosive as he is as an athlete, he needs to become a better finisher.
- While his timed speed is good (4.64) he lacks some quickness and is sometimes slow to react. He may struggle to a sideline-to-sideline player
- A good not great athlete and will be beaten in coverage by the more athletic tight ends
- He’s perfectly capable of converting speed into power when he gets to the ball, but too often he slips off tackles or turns into a grab-and-drag tackler rather than a hitter, failing to keep his legs driving through the hit.
Scouting Report: Summary
Noah Sewel is a classic throwback middle linebacker. He's excellent against the run and his tackling ability is outstanding and rarely fails to effectively wrap up. He's also surprisingly dominant as an interior blitzer. He, however, isn't great in coverage and may be forced to leave the field on third downs due to his limits as a pass defender.Sewel is the kind of player who could be a top selection-thirty years ago. Unfortunately for him, the modern NFL doesn't regard run-defending linebackers with the same importance any longer and as a result, he'll probably be viewed as a third or fourth-round selection in the 2023 NFL draft.
