Scouting Report: Strengths
- Super athletic linebacker edge rusher who combines outstanding speed 4.55 with ideal size 6-3 and 255lbs
- Hudely productive pass rusher - has been the most effective pass rusher for the past three years at Auburn
- Hall can be used as a rangy run defender inside, instinctive when it comes to locating the ball with the quickness to get to it before blockers can react at the second level.
- He has the strong core and powerful hands to shed blockers, and Hall shows excellent instincts with the ability to quickly locate the ball.
- Has the change of direction skills and ability to quickly shift his momentum you look for
- Has impressive strength for his size - a real pile driver with an effective and disruptive bull rush
- He’s quick to react and locate the ball, and he shows enough speed to succeed in backside pursuit. He plays with excellent balance and a strong core, rarely ending up on the ground
- Locates the ball quickly, and he shows good instincts when dropping into zone coverage.
- He has the classic frame and large wing span and very long arms with serious explosion, power, and ability to close
- Hall can move laterally and chase in pursuit. A tough, violent tackler with a non-stop motor
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Hall is in a hurry to get upfield but shows poor instincts when locating the ball against the run.
- Is still a little raw as a pass rusher - he's been able to win on pure athletic ability - this won't be the case at the next level, where he'll a better bag of tricks
- He far too often plays too upright letting blockers get under his pads and winning the leverage battle
- His bend around the edge is only average and lacks the overall athletic flexibility you would look for in an elite edge rusher
- Hall is so eager to get upfield that Hall often abandons responsibilities against the run.
- Not a consistent tackler, he'll make a huge hit one play and miss an easy tackle the next
Scouting Report: Summary
Derick Hall has a number of elite qualities, he's got elite speed, and overall power as well as outstanding length and has been a consistent pass-rushing threat at Auburn where he has been dominant for the last three years. These athletic qualities have stunted his development a little as he's been able to get away with natural talent alone and had no reason to work on his craft - skills that are imperative in the pro game.Despite this Hall still is an outstanding prospect with massive potential. If he develops his skillset and adds a few more pass-rushing moves he has a chance to become a pro-bowl-level player. Expect him to be selected no lower than the tail end of the second round of the 2023 NFL draft.
