Scouting Report: Strengths
- Plays with appropriate wide base and intelligence, instincts and agility to seal the edge. Aggressive extending with power to punch and looks comfortable in space.
- A better than expected athlete who steadily improved in pass protection. Stout at the point of attack and maintains a wide base.
- Shows a good feel for combo blocks, and Gaines displays good quickness and flexibility when moving to the second level, capable of sealing the back side on reach blocks
- Has the agility, technique, and size to contribute early in his professional career. Quick, active hands to latch on to defenders.
- A smooth mover and covers a lot of ground, working hard to mirror rushers; agile and keeps his feet moving.
- Does a nice job on the second level, moving upfield quickly and showing the flexibility and balance to land blocks in space.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Loses stamina and often fails to finish blocks on the second level
- Needs to prove his worth in a straight-ahead running game.
- Lacks ideal movement skills in the run game. He’ll get to the second level, but Gaines tends to lock on to a path toward his target and then struggles if he has to adjust.
