Draft Profile: Bio
Jamel Johnson was a four-star safety at Arlington Seguin High School in Texas in the 2023 class and had offers from Arkansas, Florida State and Ole Miss.

Johnson posted 19 tackles over 10 games in 2023 before starting all 12 games in 2024 with 73 tackles and a forced fumble. He briefly put his name in the portal after that season before withdrawing. In 2025 he started all 13 games, made 96 tackles and led TCU with five interceptions, including two against SMU that made him the Big 12's defensive player of the week. He was a second-team All-Big 12 pick and a Thorpe Award semifinalist.

Johnson is in his final season and has made 65 tackles in seven games. An undisclosed injury kept him out against Grambling State. He intercepted a pass at Baylor on 17 October, made 12 tackles and eight stops against West Virginia and added 12 tackles against Kansas.
Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Made 12 tackles and eight stops against West Virginia
  • Led TCU with five interceptions in his breakout 2025 season
  • Picked off a Baylor pass on 17 October
  • Productive three-year starter with more than 250 career tackles
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • Allowed seven touchdowns in coverage during the 2025 season
  • Six missed tackles, including a pair against both Arkansas State and BYU
  • Sat out against Grambling State with an injury TCU did not disclose
  • Penalized twice this season, at UCF and against Kansas
  • Gave up 553 receiving yards in coverage in 2025
Scouting Report: Summary
Johnson has been a fixture in TCU's secondary, starting three straight seasons. He is a strong tackler near the line, as his 12 tackles against West Virginia showed, and five interceptions as a junior proved his ball skills.

However, he gave up seven touchdowns in coverage in 2025 and gave up 553 yards in coverage that year. Six missed tackles this season add to the concerns.

Overall, Johnson is a smart, productive box safety with limited coverage range. He projects as a priority free agent whose path to a roster runs through special teams.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance. For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
