Draft Profile: Bio
Evan Malik Stewart, born September 4, 2003, hails from Frisco, Texas, where he attended Liberty High School. A standout two-sport athlete, Stewart not only excelled on the gridiron but also claimed the Texas 5A long jump title as a junior. His prowess on the football field earned him a five-star recruit rating and attention from top programs nationwide.Stewart initially committed to the University of Texas before reopening his recruitment and ultimately signing with Texas A&M. As an Aggie, he quickly made his mark, leading all SEC freshmen in receiving yards per game (64.9) in 2022. His sophomore campaign saw continued success, accumulating 514 yards and 4 touchdowns in just eight games.
After two seasons at Texas A&M, Stewart transferred to Oregon for the 2024 season. The former Under Armour All-American brings a combination of speed, agility, and route-running expertise to the Ducks' offense, poised to make an immediate impact in Eugene.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Elite speed and acceleration - has reportedly run a blazing 4.33 40-yard dash.
- Savvy route technician with crisp breaks and sudden COD ability. Creates consistent daylight with his stem work and route salesmanship.
- Nuanced release package. Employs foot fire, head fakes, and stutter steps to beat press. Shows advanced understanding of leverage at the LOS.
- Alignment-flexible chess piece. Can win from X, Z, or in the slot. Gives play-callers multiple options in formation design.
- Plus body control and boundary awareness. Toe-tapper who works the sidelines and adjusts well to back-shoulder throws.
- Natural hands-catcher with a wide catch radius. Plucks the ball away from his frame and shows body control to high-point in traffic.
- Slippery YAC threat. Employs sudden cuts and spin moves in the open field. Turns quick hitters into chunk plays.
- Soft spot finder against zone coverage with a knack for settling in voids and working back to the QB.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Diminutive build with minimal length and play strength. Frame limitations could hinder his ability to withstand NFL punishment.
- Struggles to defeat handsy corners in press. Can get hung up at the LOS and fails to consistently stack DBs on vertical routes.
- Route integrity wanes against physical coverage. Gets bumped off his path and struggles to reset his timing when contacted.
- Occasional concentration drops on routine catches. Double-catches at times and needs to show more consistency in securing the ball through contact.
- Limited catch radius on 50/50 balls. Lacks the size and leaping ability to consistently win jump-ball situations in the red zone.
Scouting Report: Summary
Stewart profiles as a field-stretching Z receiver with the versatility to moonlight in the slot at the next level. His home run speed and route artistry make him a constant threat to defensive coordinators, capable of stressing coverages vertically and horizontally. The former five-star recruit's ability to create separation at all three levels of the field will translate immediately to NFL offenses.Despite his slight frame, Stewart's quickness off the line and sudden breaks make him a mismatch nightmare for slower corners. He'll thrive in a spread system that emphasizes pre-snap motion and quick-hitting concepts, allowing him to operate in space and maximize his YAC ability. His skill set is tailor-made for offenses that utilize a diverse route tree and incorporate option routes to exploit defensive leverage.
To reach his ceiling at the pro level, Stewart will need to bulk up without sacrificing his twitch and learn to defeat press coverage more consistently. His ultimate value will hinge on landing with a creative play-caller who can scheme him into favorable matchups and protect him from excessive physicality early in his career. In the right system, Stewart has the tools to develop into a dangerous complementary weapon opposite an established X receiver, with the upside to grow into a high-volume target as he refines his craft.
