Following high school, Kirkwood opted to join UCLA after being heavily recruited.In 2021 as a freshman Kirkwood saw action in 12 games and played a total of 305 snaps at cornerback for the Bruins. He recorded 19 tackles, 2 assists, while adding 6 stops. In coverage Kirkwood notched up no pass breakups, one interception, and a disapointing QB rating when targetted of 120.6.

- Good instincts and anticipation reads and reacts with discipline. Dangerous with the ball in his hands.
- Shows good instincts when facing the action in zone coverage, and Kirkwood has solid ball skills.
- Good agility and balance when shadowing his target. Competitive player.
- He’s tall-framed with long arms to match. With his powerful hands, straight-line speed, and fluidity in his hips, turning and chasing downfield shouldn’t be a problem.
- Has a tall frame and long arms, plus strong hands, giving him a huge catch radius.
- Lean, athletic build with plenty of room for additional muscle mass. Legitimate NFL-caliber athlete.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Feet aren’t ideal, as Kirkwood gets sloppy in his backpedal and can be sluggish when transitioning to close on the ball.
- Inconsistent getting off of blocks. Can be a step slow to react when a quarterback comes back to his side of the field late in progression.
- Not an explosive player and needs to show better bend and flexibility in his drops - plays too high.
