Draft Profile: Bio
Benedict Umeh was born in Nigeria and raised in Toronto, then crossed the border to play at Avon Old Farms, a Connecticut boarding school. On3 placed him 64th among 2024 recruits, the All-American Bowl selected him, and he wrestled, ran track and played volleyball. He chose Stanford over Penn State, Wisconsin and Duke, saying academics were the biggest factor.

In the spring of 2023 Umeh was diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkin lymphoma. He completed chemotherapy and was declared cancer-free that November, then signed with Stanford and enrolled for the 2024 season.

Umeh did not play in 2024 and made two appearances in 2025, both on the field goal defense unit, against San Jose State and Notre Dame. He has a larger role on the edge this fall and has made three tackles, including a half tackle for loss, but no sacks. He is a redshirt sophomore.
Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Tested with an elite forty, giving him rare burst off the edge
  • Ranked 64th nationally by On3 in the 2024 recruiting class
  • Beat Stage 4 Hodgkin lymphoma before arriving at Stanford
  • Brings a multi-sport background in wrestling, track and volleyball
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • Three tackles and no sacks in his first real playing time
  • Appeared only on field goal defense in 2025
  • Did not see the field during the 2024 season
  • Very little defensive tape across three college seasons
  • No standout game to point to in 2026
Scouting Report: Summary
Umeh is a fast, resilient edge prospect who overcame Stage 4 cancer before college. He was a top-70 national recruit and has earned a bigger role at Stanford this season.

However, his production is thin, with three tackles and no sacks, and his first two seasons were spent almost entirely off the field.

Overall, Umeh is a raw edge rusher with impressive physical traits and a remarkable story. He projects as a priority free agent and has time left to develop at Stanford.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance. For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
