Draft Profile: Bio
Colbie Young, born in Binghamton, New York, played football and basketball at Binghamton High School. As a senior, he earned first-team Class AA all-state honors, scoring 14 touchdowns in eight games. Young began his collegiate career at Lackawanna College, recording 24 receptions for 472 yards and nine touchdowns as a freshman. He then transferred to Miami, where he spent his sophomore and junior seasons. In 2022, Young's first year at Miami, he saw action in nine games and started five of the final six. He finished the season with 32 receptions for 367 yards and five touchdowns, ranking third on the team in catches and second in receiving yards. Young's production increased in 2023, as he played in all 12 games, starting 11. He tallied 47 catches for 563 yards and five scores, ranking third on the team in both receptions and receiving yards.
Following his junior year at Miami, Young entered the transfer portal and ultimately chose to play his final season of eligibility at the University of Georgia. During spring practice with the Bulldogs, Young dealt with an ankle injury but still participated in team activities. The 6'3", 215-pound wideout quickly caught the attention of teammates and coaches with his size and ability to win jump balls, despite being limited by the injury.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Prototypical X-receiver frame at 6'3" and 215 pounds, creating mismatches against smaller defensive backs
- Vacuum hands in traffic, demonstrating the ability to pluck the ball away from his frame
- Polished route runner in the short to intermediate areas, showcasing crisp cuts and efficient footwork
- High-point specialist, excelling in contested catch situations and using body positioning to shield defenders
- Red zone weapon, consistently winning on fade routes and back-shoulder throws
- Deceptive release off the line of scrimmage, using head fakes and quick footwork to create initial separation
- Savvy in finding soft spots against zone coverage, presenting a reliable target for quarterbacks
- Demonstrates football IQ and adaptability, having succeeded in multiple offensive systems
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Lacks top-end speed to consistently threaten defenses vertically, limiting big-play potential
- Struggles to create separation against press coverage, particularly against longer corners
- Raw as a perimeter blocker, needs to improve hand placement and sustain blocks in the run game
- Limited experience against elite competition, having only one season in the SEC
- Lacks elite short-area quickness, potentially limiting effectiveness in option routes and against quick-twitch corners
Scouting Report: Summary
Young's combination of size, strong hands, and route-running acumen make him an intriguing prospect for NFL teams seeking a possession receiver with red zone upside. His ability to win contested catches and find soft spots in zone coverage should translate well to the next level, particularly in third-down and goal-line situations. While his lack of top-end speed may limit his role as a deep threat, Young's skill set aligns well with West Coast offenses or systems that emphasize intermediate routes. Scheme fit will be crucial for Young's NFL success. Teams employing possession-based passing attacks could maximize his strengths, using him as a chain-mover and red zone target. However, Young will need to improve his blocking technique and ability to separate against press coverage to become a more well-rounded contributor. His experience in multiple offensive systems throughout his college career should aid his transition to the professional level. Young's physical tools and productive college career suggest potential to develop into a reliable secondary receiving option in the right system. While he may not project as an immediate star, his unique blend of size, hands, and football IQ could make him a valuable addition to an NFL receiving corps. How other scouting services rate Colbie Young (Overall Rank)
