C.J. Johnson from D H Conley High School was rated a 3-star recruit by ESPN and handed a 3-star grade by 247 Sports. After high school, Johnson opted to join East Carolina.

In 2019 as a freshman Johnson saw action in 12 games for the Pirates as he made 55 receptions for 922 yards for an average of 16.8 yards per reception, with 4 TDs, and an excellent QB rating when targeted of 91.6.

As a sophomore in 2020 he played 9 games and had 19 catches for 405 yards for an average of 21.3 yards per catch, with 6 TDs, and an excellent QB rating when targeted of 109.8.

As a junior in 2021 he played 12 games and hauled in 35 catches for 520 yards for an average of 14.9 yards per catch, with one TD, and QB rating when targeted of 70.4.

As a senior in 2022 he played 12 games and had 60 catches for 933 yards for an average of 15.6 yards per catch, 9 TDs, and an excellent QB rating when targeted of 142.0.
Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Johnson has reliable hands and shows the willingness to make catches in traffic over the middle.
  • A fluid mover capable of creating some separation over the middle of the field, Johnson has the long arms and soft hands to provide a sizable catch radius.
  • He transitions quickly from receiver to runner, and he has enough speed to threaten the seam.
  • Has the strong hands any NFL wide receiver coach and quarterback would covet. Tracks the deep ball over either shoulder and brings in passes fluidly without breaking stride downfield.
  • He’s very good in contested-catch situations, using his frame effectively to make plays facing the quarterback. Johnson also shows a knack for high-pointing the ball, consistently outmuscling defensive backs.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • Johnson lacks the twitch to create consistent separation, and despite his size and ability to track the ball downfield, Johnson isn’t great on contested catches.
  • He really isn’t a guy who will create a lot of separation.
  • His ability to track the ball is good enough, but he too often let the ball get into his body downfield rather than snatching it with his hands.
  • His playing speed is less than elite. Johnson won’t run past defenders like he did at the college level.
