Scouting Report: Strengths
- Stevenson looks like a prototypical outside cover corner standing at 6-0, weighing in at 198lbs, and running a 4.45 forty
- He’s long and strong enough in his core to steer receivers to the sideline without getting grabby with his hands when playing inside technique.
- He’ll line up in press at times, where Stevenson has a quick and powerful punch. His ball skills are good, and he plays with an extremely confident and competitive demeanor.
- He’s tall-framed with long arms to match. With his powerful hands, straight-line speed, and fluidity in his hips, turning and chasing downfield shouldn’t be a problem
- Can track the ball downfield and gets his head around when playing in a trail position, and he shows excellent ball skills when breaking on a route. He’s a plus tackler in run support as well.
- Very physical man/press corner - get's in the face of receivers and has the speed to run vertically with them
- Has good arm length combined with excellent leaping ability enabling him to be an effective red zone defender
- He’s a technician in press coverage, with a strong punch and the ability to reroute receivers.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Susceptible to double moves, though that could be coached out of him. But the problem is that Stevenson doesn’t track the ball downfield, and he seems to lack the ball skills to break up plays.
- Has elite long speed but he's not quite as twitchy as you would like and his short area quickness is only average - confirmed by his subpar three-cone at the combine
- Is only an average tackler and doesn't consistently wrap up
- Doesn't display enough awareness when playing zone
- Often plays like he's unaware of what's going on around him beyond locking down his primary receiver
- Has a tendency to get grabby, something that will have to be coached out of him.
- Needs to develop a better understanding of route combinations and better overall vision.
- Feet aren’t ideal, as he gets sloppy in his backpedal and can be sluggish when transitioning to close on the ball.
Player Comparison
Stanley Jean-BaptisteScouting Report: Summary
Tyrique Stevenson is an excellent athlete with ideal size and speed for the position, he's aggressive and has all the tools to become a very good press corner at the next level, However currently he displays issues that can't be overlooked - he's a very inconsistent tackler, has little instinct to operate as a zone corner and lacks the quickness required to reroute effectively. Stevenson is a high ceiling low floor kind of player, who has the potential to become a quality pro man corner although he currently isn't quite there.Expect Stevenson to be selected in the second or third round of the 2023 NFL draft.
