Scouting Report: Strengths
- Brents has an incredible combination of size speed and explosion. His measurables are off the scale standing 6-3, with arms in the 93rd percentile, a vertical leap in the 98th, and a broad jump in the 100th
- Brents has the straight-line speed to recover. His ball skills are tremendous, with good hands and the potential to take it to the house any time Brents gets his hands on the ball
- Can get up under a receiver’s chin and has the speed to flip his hips and run downfield. Brents has the quick and surprisingly powerful hands to jostle receivers early. But he’s at his best peeking into the backfield.
- His play has consistently improved every year. In 2022 he put a year together where he was elite in both run defense and in coverage where he allowed a QB rating of just 57.7
- Amazing in jump ball situations - rarely loses a high point battle. Will be dominant in the red zone.
- Offers position versatility - was originally a safety but switched positions to take advantage of his height and long speed
- Very aggressive player both in coverage and as a tackler - able to get into the backfield on blitzes
- He plays zone defense well but he plays press coverage like an experienced pro corner
- Has smooth body control with the fluid ability to plant and redirect in any direction. Plays fast and decisive, arriving to the play with fierce intentions.
- Gives up his body in run support with a very good closing burst.
- Tracks the ball well downfield and shows good ball skills, including the ability to go up and high-point it in contested-catch situations.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Needs to develop a better understanding of route combinations and better overall vision
- Can be caught out of position due to over-aggressive play
- His long speed is good but not elite and so will need help deep against the swiftest receivers
- Can be susceptible play fakes - needs to learn to read the quarterbacks eyes more consistently
- Feet aren’t ideal, as Brents gets sloppy in his backpedal and can occasionally be sluggish when transitioning to close on the ball
- Needs to improve his footwork and balance in coverage
- Is an overaged prospect who will be 24 in Jan of 2024
Scouting Report: Summary
Julius Brents is an outstanding prospect, he possesses elite athletic ability which he demonstrated at the combine. He also has prototypical length and size and displays elite skills when lined up as an outside press corner. However, Brents could have had an even higher upside if he made the switch back to safety where his talents as a hitter and experienced tackler would be put to better use - we could see him ultimately as being elite. As a corner Brents is very good in coverage but not outstanding and his lack of deep speed could be taken advantage of by speedier receivers at the next level. He also needs to become better at reading the QB and not being beaten due to generally overly aggressive play.
Overall, Brents projects to be a very good pro prospect as a corner where he projects to become a solid starter as an outside corner. As a corner, we look at him as representing good value in the second or third round of the 2023 NFL draft, however, he offers first-round value if viewed as a potential safety prospect.
