Scouting Report: Strengths
- Tracks the ball well downfield and shows good ball skills, including the ability to go up and high-point it in contested-catch situations.
- Great on route recognition and has click-and-close ability
- Very experienced player who has played nearly 1500 snaps at Maryland and averaged an impressive 77.1 career QB rating when targetted
- Super athletic and has the ideal size for the position standing 6-2 and weighing 205lbs - looks more like a strong side safety
- Totally blew up the combine workouts - displayed elite speed, jumping ability, and overall explosiveness
- Very good press corner - an aggressive player who isn't overwhelmed by bigger tight ends
- Attacks the ball with authority, with quick read-and-react ability. Willing and physical tackler flashes toughness and aggressive nature vs. the run.
- He’s an outstanding defender in run support displays linebacker-like skills and closes fast to make plays against quick screens.
- Ideally suited lined up outside on team's Z-receiver
- Has the ability to sink his hips and transition in and out of his back peddle with ease
- Has good football awareness to read and react quickly and stay balanced and patient in space.
- Has a powerful punch at the line of scrimmage and can deliver it while moving his feet. Banks also has the powerful core and hips to stick to a receiver downfield and escort him to the sideline
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Inconsistent getting off of blocks. Can be a step slow to react when a quarterback comes back to his side of the field late in progression.
- Despite standing 6-2 his arm length is only average (in the 58th percentile)
- Not much of a ball hawk - has only made two career interceptions
- Susceptible to double moves, though that could be coached out of him. But the problem is that Banks doesn’t track the ball downfield, and he seems to lack the ball skills to break up plays.
- Not instinctive playing in zone coverage - he masks his lack of disciplined technique with overly aggressive play
- Too often looks unbalanced when back peddling against faster receivers
Scouting Report: Summary
Deonte Banks is a quality raft prospect who has ideal size, is a dominant run defender as well as an outstanding tackler, combined with elite speed and agility. He also is excellent as a short-range press corner who dominates smaller receivers and easily holds up against larger tight ends. Overall Banks will be viewed as a corner with outstanding traits and potential who does most things pretty well which gives him some versatility as a prospect. Currently, we expect Banks to be a high second-round selection in the 2023 NFL draft.Deonte Banks percentiles vs other Cornerbacks (NFL Combine historically - higher value represents better perfomance)
