Mekhi Garner attended Poteet High School and was rated a 3-star prospect by 247 Sports with a scout's rating of 0.820, going unranked by ESPN. Following high school, Garner opted to join Louisiana.In 2019 as a freshman Garner saw action in just 2 games and played a total of 49 snaps at cornerback for the Ragin' Cajuns. He recorded only 3 tackles, one assist, while adding one stop. In coverage Garner notched up no pass breakups, no interceptions, and an outstanding QB rating when targetted of 39.6.
As a sophomore in 2020 he played in 11 games and logged 491 snaps for the Ragin' Cajuns. He made 25 tackles, 3 assists, and had 10 stops. In coverage he totaled 7 pass breakups, 3 interceptions, and an outstanding QB rating when targetted of 29.1.

Scouting Report: Strengths
- He’s tall-framed with long arms to match. With his powerful hands, straight-line speed, and fluidity in his hips, turning and chasing downfield shouldn’t be a problem.

- Flashes some physicality as a hitter.
- Has excellent ball skills, tracking the ball effectively and instinctively taking the right route to break up the play. Garner has the strong hands and coordination to come down with interceptions.
- Can track the ball downfield and gets his head around when playing in a trail position, and Garner shows excellent ball skills when breaking on a route. He’s a plus tackler in run support as well.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Despite his size, he’s not an overly physical tackler. Garner might have to add some weight at the next level in order to become more physical.
- Lacks elite speed to recover if beaten on double move. Ducks his head and swipes too often on open-field tackles.
- Rght now he’s only capable of playing in trail position, and even then he’d likely be draw a lot of flags.
- Garner runs well, but Garner doesn’t have elite recovery speed.
