Scouting Report: Strengths
- His competitiveness and knack for high-pointing the ball allow him to play bigger than his size.
- Mims is a natural playmaker, at his best with the ball in his hands, and is a vertical threat
- He’s excellent downfield, accelerating to top speed quickly and stacking on top of cornerbacks. He has excellent body control, contorting to make difficult catches and working well on back-shoulder throws.
- Good hands who goes up and attacks the ball to bring it in in contested catch situations
- Very productive player who has consistently put up elite numbers
- Has experience as a punt returner - will likely be used in that capacity as he develops in the pros
- Mims was frequently put in catch-and-run situations, and he shows good vision with the ability to make tacklers miss in space. He’ll also break a tackle or two; he’s extremely competitive and will give effort as a downfield blocker.
- Often used on deep routes, getting separation down the sideline or over the middle on crossing routes by extending his arms rather than pure speed.
- He’s also a violent runner with the ball in his hands. He’s very good working outside the numbers, showing excellent ball-tracking skills, and he does the little things well downfield, including leaving enough room on the sideline for his quarterback to drop in a throw.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Mims is small at 5-11 and just a little over 180lbs and as a result will be outmuscled by bigger DBs. He will likely be limited to slot player
- Was underused in 2021 and as a result hasn't developed a wide route tree
- Doesn't have the size to consistently win on the outside, but can be productive working the middle of the field and as a return man.
- He’ll have to develop a better feel for sitting down against zone coverage.
Scouting Report: Summary
Marvin Mims is a quality pro prospect who has excellent hands, and top speed and is elite at making yards after the catch. He however is on the slight side and may struggle against bigger NFL corners. Mims was underused in 2021 and 2022 will be massive for him - If he has a good year and establishes himself as the Sooner's number one target expect him to go as high as the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft.Marvin Mims Jr. percentiles vs other Wide Receivers (NFL Combine historically - higher value represents better perfomance)
