Draft Profile: Bio
A highly-touted recruit out of high school, Kyle McCord spent three seasons at Ohio State before transferring to Syracuse for his final year of eligibility. The 6'3", 215-pound signal-caller was born on April 12, 2002, in Mt. Laurel, New Jersey. He starred at St. Joseph's Prep in Philadelphia, leading the team to three straight state championships. As a five-star prospect, McCord was ranked as the #3 quarterback and #25 overall player in the 2021 class. At Ohio State, McCord served as C.J. Stroud's backup for two seasons before taking over as the starter in 2023. He threw for 3,170 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions while completing 65.8% of his passes. McCord guided the Buckeyes to an 11-1 regular season record and a Cotton Bowl berth. He earned Third Team All-Big Ten honors for his efforts. After entering the transfer portal, McCord chose Syracuse for his final collegiate season.
McCord's dad Derek played quarterback at Rutgers from 1988-1992. At Ohio State, Kyle was a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and two-time OSU Scholar-Athlete. He finished his Buckeyes career ranking 15th in passing yards, 4th in completion percentage, and 5th in passing yards per game in program history.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Prototypical size and frame for the position with a strong arm capable of making all the NFL throws
- Quick, compact release allows him to get the ball out quickly and accurately to all levels of the field
- Displays excellent touch and ball placement on intermediate and deep passes, routinely hitting receivers in stride
- Poised in the pocket and keeps his eyes downfield while navigating pressure
- Intelligent player who reads defenses well pre-snap and goes through progressions efficiently
- Experienced in a pro-style offense and comfortable operating from under center or in shotgun
- Showed marked improvement in decision-making and limiting turnovers as a full-time starter in 2023
- Wins from the pocket with his arm talent, accuracy, and ability to throw receivers open
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Lacks elite mobility and scrambling ability to consistently extend plays or be a threat in the run game
- Can be hesitant at times to pull the trigger, leading to missed opportunities downfield
- Needs to improve consistency on deep ball accuracy, tends to overthrow open receivers at times
- Footwork can get sloppy under pressure, affecting his accuracy when forced off his spot
- Only one year as a full-time starter at the Power 5 level raises questions about his overall experience
Scouting Report: Summary
McCord's arm talent flashes NFL potential, but his overall body of work raises concerns. His ability to make anticipatory throws and operate from the pocket are positives. However, his lack of mobility and inconsistent decision-making under pressure are major red flags at the next level. The limited starting experience at the Power 5 level is evident in McCord's tape. He struggles to consistently elevate his team's performance against top-tier competition. While he can make flashy throws, his inability to consistently execute in crucial situations is a major drawback. His ceiling appears limited by his athletic constraints and decision-making lapses.
McCord faces an uphill battle to stick on an NFL roster. His best path forward may be as a camp arm or practice squad player, where he can develop without the pressure of game action. A patient quarterback coach might see enough raw tools to work with, but McCord will need to show improvement to have a shot at a backup role in the league.

For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.
*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
