Scouting Report: Strengths
- Has the natural power to move defenders at the point of attack. Flax also has the agility and speed to get out in front and land blocks at the second level. He also shows a good understanding of angles when climbing to the second level.
- Quick to get his hands up and will use his length to his advantage early in the down.
- Has a powerful lower body and enough leg drive to knock defenders back at the point of attack. He flashes light feet as a pass protector, with the ability to mirror against quickness and the anchor strength to hold up against the bull rush.
- He has the size teams look for at the tackle spots, and that is probably enough to get him a look as a swing tackle.
- He has a prototypical build for the edge. Along with his height, Flax has broad shoulders and a tapered, athletic build, as well long arms
- As a pass protector, he plays with good balance and holds up against the bull rush. Flax has strong hands and does a nice job gripping and latching on once he has his hands on the pass rusher.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Loses leverage battles and plays with high pad level. Can be late off the snap.
- Often simply tries to push pass rushers past the pocket. Flax can also look a bit hesitant when it comes to recognizing and reacting to twists, stunts and blitzes up front.
- Can look a little shaky in pass protection against speed-to-power, as his upper and lower body aren’t always coordinated.
