• When shifty receivers win off the line, he lacks the recovery burst to get back into phase.

Scouting Report: Summary

The defense that gets the most out of Kilgore is one that asks its safeties to play physical in the box while handling nickel duties on early downs. His run defense is the calling card. The tape shows a player who wants to get downhill and hit, and his size and play strength give him real value against the tight ends and bigger slot receivers that offenses are increasingly leaning on. Paired with a rangy, single-high safety behind him, he could settle into a strong safety or big nickel role and contribute quickly in a defined package.

The coverage is where evaluators will split on him. His zone instincts are solid, and the interception numbers back up his ability to read quarterbacks and jump routes. But the technique in man coverage is still inconsistent, and NFL receivers will exploit the rounded breaks and occasional hip stiffness that show up on tape. His best coverage reps came when South Carolina asked him to play over tight ends and underneath zones rather than mirroring quicker slot receivers downfield. His skill set fits a hybrid safety who can handle coverage responsibilities within structure but isn't asked to be an island in man.

The physical tools, SEC experience, and ball production give him a floor as a quality rotational piece, and the ceiling is a versatile starter if the coverage refinement comes along. Captaining an SEC defense as a junior and graduating early speaks to the kind of worker and teammate he is. For a defense that runs two-high shells and needs a physical presence near the line of scrimmage, Kilgore fills a specific and increasingly important role.
