A three-star recruit out of Texas who played wide receiver for most of his high school career, Jermod McCoy was better known as a track athlete than a cornerback prospect coming out of Whitehouse. State titles in the long jump and triple jump underlined the athleticism, but the football instincts at corner were still a work in progress.After starting five games as a freshman at Oregon State in the Pac-12, McCoy transferred to Tennessee and broke out in 2024. He finished with 44 tackles, nine pass breakups, and four interceptions, three of which came inside the opponent's 3-yard line. The production earned him Second-Team All-America honors and a spot on the Jim Thorpe Award semifinalist list.
A torn ACL suffered during an offseason training session in January 2025 wiped out his entire junior campaign, and McCoy elected to skip the Senior Bowl and Combine workout to save his testing for Tennessee's Pro Day. The patience paid off. Running a 4.37 forty with a 38-inch vertical and 10-foot-7 broad jump while going through full position drills on the repaired knee, McCoy reminded scouts why he entered the 2025 offseason as the top corner in the class.

He sees route concepts develop, trusts what he sees, and attacks the throwing window with timing most young corners take years to develop. The three interceptions inside the opponent's 3-yard line in 2024 were not luck, they were the product of a corner who understands red zone spacing and plays the ball through the receiver's hands. That instinctive feel, paired with testing numbers that now match the tape, gives him a true CB1 projection rather than a hedged one.
The questions that remain are fair but narrow. The repaired knee has to hold through 17 games of physical coverage work, and the Jeremiah Smith film from the Ohio State Playoff loss is a reminder that bigger receivers can still win on pure size and ball tracking. Neither concern is enough to change the bigger picture.
