Draft Profile: Bio
Hailing from Nevada, Bernard first made waves at Liberty High School, where he earned the prestigious Gatorade Player of the Year honor for the state in his senior year. His impressive high school career, which included 956 yards and 12 touchdowns on 53 receptions in his final season, caught the attention of major college recruiters.Bernard's collegiate journey began at Michigan State in 2022, where he appeared in all 12 games as a true freshman. Despite limited opportunities, he managed to make an impact, recording seven receptions for 128 yards and two touchdowns. He also contributed on special teams, returning six kickoffs for 119 yards. Seeking a larger role, Bernard transferred to Washington for the 2023 season.
At Washington, his role expanded significantly. He played in 14 of 15 games, starting seven, and finished fifth on the team with 34 catches for 419 yards. His versatility shone through as he also contributed in the run game and on special teams, returning both kickoffs and punts. Bernard's standout performance came against Arizona, where he caught eight passes for 98 yards and added a rushing touchdown.
Following a successful season with the Huskies, Bernard made another pivotal move, transferring to Alabama for his final collegiate season. This transfer to the Crimson Tide represents a significant opportunity for Bernard to showcase his skills in the highly competitive SEC and potentially become the go-to receiver Alabama has been seeking since 2021. Head coach Kalen DeBoer has already praised Bernard's work ethic and potential, setting the stage for what could be a breakout season in one of college football's most storied programs.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Reliable hands: Consistently secures catches, showing good receiving skills and dependability as a target in crucial situations.
- Field stretcher: Demonstrates ability to get behind defenses and make plays downfield, keeping safeties honest and opening up underneath routes.
- Route technician: Runs effective patterns at all three levels, creating separation through good footwork and body control.
- YAC threat: Shows potential with the ball in his hands, turning short catches into chunk plays and stressing defensive schemes.
- Versatile weapon: Contributes in multiple phases including rushing and returns, adding value as a Swiss Army knife offensive piece.
- Adaptable: Successfully transitioned between three major college programs, indicating ability to learn and apply new offensive systems.
- Red zone asset: Shows ability to find the end zone as both receiver and runner, providing scoring upside in condensed field situations.
- Special teams contributor: Experience in return game offers immediate contribution potential while developing as a receiver at the next level.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Lacks prototypical NFL X-receiver size, potentially limiting effectiveness against press-man and in contested catch situations.
- Long speed is a question mark, may struggle to consistently separate from NFL corners in vertical game.
- Resume lacks true WR1 production, raising concerns about the ability to shoulder heavy target share against NFL competition.
- Needs to improve play strength and technique as a blocker to stay on the field in run-heavy packages.
- Limited experience as the primary read in the passing game could lead to growing pains when faced with CB1 coverage in pros.
Scouting Report: Summary
Bernard's transfer to Alabama for the 2024 season presents a golden opportunity to elevate his draft stock. The Crimson Tide's high-powered offense and SEC spotlight offer the perfect stage for Bernard to showcase his full potential. If he can establish himself as a go-to target and produce consistently against top-tier competition, he could significantly boost his NFL prospects.NFL teams will be watching closely to see how Bernard performs in Alabama's pro-style system. His ability to adapt quickly and potentially emerge as a primary receiver will be crucial. A strong showing could vault him up draft boards, while continued versatility in the return game adds to his appeal. Bernard's 2024 campaign at Alabama will likely make or break his draft position.
As he enters his final college season, Bernard has the chance to answer lingering questions about his ability to be a WR1. If he can put together a breakout year in Tuscaloosa, combining impressive stats with improved blocking and route-running, he could solidify himself as a Day 2 pick with the potential to contribute immediately at the next level.
