Dontay Demus Jr. from Friendship Academy High School as a senior made 66 catches for 1,167 yards and 12 touchdowns and helped lead Friendship to an 8-4 record and a trip to the DCSAA Class AA championship game in 2017. As a result, was rated a 3-star recruit by ESPN and handed a 3-star grade by 247 Sports. Following high school, he opted to join Maryland Maryland over Michigan State and Wisconsin.

In 2018 as a freshman Demus Jr. saw action in 12 games for the Terrapins as he made 13 receptions for 278 yards for an average of 21.4 yards per reception, with no TDs, and had a QB rating when targeted of 78.1.

As a sophomore in 2019 he played in 12 games and had 42 catches for 629 yards for an average of 15.0 yards per catch, with 6 TDs, and a QB rating when targeted of 84.8. Demus Jr. received an Honorable All-Big Ten selection and ended up leading the Terps in every receiving category. He again received an Honorable All-Big Ten selection

As a junior in 2020 he played in all 5 games and hauled in 24 catches for 365 yards for an average of 15.2 yards per catch, with 4 TDs, and a QB rating when targeted of 72.9.

As a senior in 2021 Demus played in 5 games and before suffering a season-ending ACL injury put up 28 catches for 507 yards for an average of 18.1 yards per catch, 3 TDs, and a QB rating when targeted of 146.5.

Heading into the 2022 season he made the 2022 Pro Football Focus First Team Preseason All-Big Ten, the 2022 Phil Steele Third Team Preseason All-Big Ten, the 2022 East-West Shrine Bowl 1000, and the 2022 Reese's Senior Bowl Watch List.

As a fifth-year senior in 2022 he played 12 games and had a decent 22 catches for 233 yards for an average of 10.6 yards per catch, one TD, and a QB rating when targeted of 66.9.
Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Demus has strong hands and is extremely competitive, and Demus has an innate sense of timing when it comes to elevating and high-pointing balls.
  • Ideal size X type receiver at 6-4 215lbs, who also has experience in the the big slot role
  • Can be a matchup issue for smaller cornerbacks - who he can outjump and overpower
  • Very good straight-line speed and is difficult to keep up with he hits his top gear
  • He has quick feet and good body control, allowing him to gear down and quickly get in and out of cuts. His hands are good, and he’s a creative runner after the catch with the elusiveness to slip tackles in space.
  • He tracks the ball well downfield and consistently runs under long throws.
  • Thriving on physicality, he’s a contested-catch specialist with a knack for warding off defenders while the ball is in the air. He has strong hands and the ability to wrestle the ball away from defenders.
  • A force working up the seam, he accelerates quickly and glides once he gets going.
  • Has enough upper-body strength and tenacity to be very effective as a downfield blocker. Is not shy about taking on his man, provides some pop and will open a running lane for his back at the next level.
  • Generally sure-handed receiver capable of making difficult catches in traffic over the middle or one on one down the sideline.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • His route running is only average - he's been able to get away with relying on his athletic skills thus far - something he'll be unable to do in the pro game
  • His speed is good but not elite - will not blow by NFL corners
  • Demus also had problems with drops when coming back to the action. Despite his size, he has had some issues against press coverage, sometimes spending too much time hand fighting at the line of scrimmage.
  • Was leading the Big Ten as a receiver before blowing out his ACL - he'll need to demonstrate to scouts that he's fully healed
Scouting Report: Summary
Dontay Demus Jr. is a good pro prospect who has pretty much everything you look for in a pro-style X-type receiver. He's big and tall with great soft hands and good long speed to eat into DBs cushion deep. The only issue keeping him out of the best WRs in the class is his injury - if he can show he's fully back to form and put up good numbers in 2022 expect him to be looked at as a possible first-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance. For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
