He played baseball, basketball, and football and helped win state championships with both football and basketball teams. Drummond was named second-team all-state by the Clarion-Ledger after outstanding senior season. With the hope of making it to a big school he went the JUCO route and joined East Mississippi Community College wherein two seasons had 95 receptions, 1,466 receiving yards, and 21 touchdowns. Was Consensus 3-star prospect according to 247Sports, Rivals, and ESPN. Following his sophomore season and chose Ole Miss over Arkansas, Kansas, Colorado State, and Arkansas State.
In 2019 as a junior he appeared in all 12 games at wide receiver, with nine starts, and was third on the team with 13 catches for 188 yards in his first season.
Drummond became a starter in 2020 and played in all 10 games, registering nine starts at wide receiver. He made 25 catches for 417 yards and seven TDs - with a 104.4 QB rating when targeted.
Exercising an additional year of eligibility due to pandemic in 2021, Drummond, in his second senior year broke out and became Matt Corral's number one target with 1031 YDs with 76 receptions, 8 TDs, and an impressive 136.3 QB rating when targeted. This performance led to him being named to the Biletnikoff Award Watch List.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Talented athlete with a powerful frame who is built like a running back - akin to Deebo Samuel
- Drummond had an advanced route tree at Ole Miss. and ran most of them crisply with fluidity
- Has good but not elite straight-line speed but takes advantage of open seams when his quarterback is on target and we've not seen him caught from behind
- Excellent runner after the catch and runs like a running back - needs more than an arm tackle to bring him down
- A savvy, natural pass-catcher with reliable hands and very good focus. Snatches the ball out of the air and shows the concentration to make acrobatic catches look easy.
- Has good body strength to squirm out of tackles with the coordination to maneuver his frame between defenders.
- Has enough upper-body strength and tenacity to be very effective as a downfield blocker. Is not shy about taking on his man, provides some pop and will open a running lane for his back at the next level.
- Has proven ability as kick returner
- Often used use in the RPO - which offers up versatility at the next level. Lined up all over the field, out wide, in the slot, even used at H-back
- Physical player able to get off press coverage to release up the sideline or position himself inside the cornerback on slants and crossing routes.
- Good quickness off the line. Has size and quickness to get off NFL press.
- QB's just need to toss the ball in his area and he'll come down with it.
- Strong runner with the ball with enough agility to make defenders miss in the open field.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Drummond doesn't have a lot of experience in the deep passing game - so will likely need to develop him game in the pros
- Hasn't created a lot of separation at the college level and will need to prove at the combine he has the speed capable of doing so in the NFL
- The majority of Drummond's touches at college were manufactured in the RPO and gadget plays - and he was rarely asked to get open himself
- While having a good route tree they were mostly short-intermediate level and has little experience as a traditional pro receiver
- Comes off the snap high and upright, and doesn't get to top speed quickly. Not sudden or elusive.
- Does not always use his hands to secure deep throws, allowing the ball into his pads and chest.
Scouting Report: Summary
Dontario Drummond is good but not a great NFL prospect who has a nice combination of size, strength, speed, and soft reliable hands His final season at Ole Miss showed he can be a dominant college player, as he put up over a thousand yards when paired with Matt Corral. He however doesn't seem to be elite in any area and has only had limited action as a traditional pro-style receiver and so may be viewed as a developmental prospect. We expect Drummond to be taken in the latter portion of the 2022 NFL Draft and likely make a name for himself as a special teamer before eventually breaking into the starting lineup.
