Draft Profile: Bio
Devan Thompkins, a three-star recruit from Edison High School in Stockton, California, is the nephew of former NFL linebacker Larry Grant. He signed with USC in the 2022 class and played sparingly in his first two seasons before becoming a regular in the Trojans' defensive line rotation.Thompkins made 24 tackles and 1.5 sacks in 2024, then had his best season at USC in 2025 with 31 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, three sacks and a forced fumble. He then left USC through the portal and committed to Alabama in January.
In Kane Wommack's 4-2-5 scheme, Thompkins has played both the Bandit end position and three-technique tackle. After a quiet debut against East Carolina, he had two sacks and a forced fumble in the 45-17 win at Kentucky, then added a sack in the 50-36 win over Florida State. He has 19 tackles, three sacks and a forced fumble on the season.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Big, long 6-foot-5, 300-pound frame that can play Bandit end or three-technique
- Collapses the pocket from inside alignments; rushing is clearly the better half of his game
- Two sacks and a forced fumble in the win at Kentucky
- Five tackles and a sack against Florida State, shedding blocks to finish plays
- Showed it at USC too, with two sacks and a forced fumble against Michigan in 2025
- Productive final USC season, with 6.5 tackles for loss, three sacks and a forced fumble
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Run defense is his weaker half; Iowa and Northwestern moved him off the ball in 2025
- Ordinary production at USC, with 4.5 sacks over four seasons
- Lacks the burst of a true edge; kept outside against South Carolina, his rush stalled
- No sacks in the last two games, despite steady pocket pressure at Mississippi State
Scouting Report: Summary
Thompkins has found a role at Alabama that suits his unusual skill set. He is a 300-pound lineman who moves well enough to play the Bandit end spot in Kane Wommack's scheme, and he can slide inside to three-technique on passing downs, where his length and quickness make him difficult for guards to handle. His best work comes as a pass rusher, and he showed it early, with two sacks and a forced fumble at Kentucky and a sack against Florida State. He was productive against good offenses at USC as well, with two sacks and a forced fumble against Michigan in 2025, and teammates rave about how hard he is to block in practice. However, his production at USC was modest for a player with his tools, with just 4.5 sacks in four seasons, and his sack production has cooled since the Florida State game. His run defense is less convincing, as he plays with a high center of gravity and can be moved off the ball by double teams, and when Alabama kept him outside for most of the South Carolina game, he lacked the burst to win around the corner. The rest of the season has to show more consistency to justify the early buzz.
Overall, Thompkins is a versatile, athletic lineman whose size and movement skills give him a clear NFL role. He projects as a third-round pick whose best fit is five-technique in an odd front or a rotational interior rusher, with starting upside if his run defense catches up to his pass rush.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank
in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance.
For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.
*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
