Draft Profile: Bio
Deontae Lawson arrived at Tuscaloosa in 2021 as one of the nation's top linebacker prospects. The 6'2", 239-pound defender established himself as a dominant force at Mobile Christian School, where he captained his team to a Class 3A Championship Game appearance in 2019 while collecting 134 tackles and earning Class 3A Lineman of the Year honors. His versatility was evident even in high school, taking snaps at running back and wide receiver while dominating defensively. A consensus four-star recruit with a five-star rating from 247Sports, Lawson chose the Crimson Tide over Georgia Tech and Texas A&M.

After redshirting his 2021 season, Lawson's development accelerated through 2022 as he gained valuable experience on multiple special teams units while rotating into the linebacker corps. His breakthrough came in 2023 when he seized control of the middle linebacker position, starting 11 games while recording 67 tackles and 5.5 tackles for loss. Despite missing three games with ankle injuries, he earned semifinalist recognition for the Butkus Award. Lawson's 2024 campaign showcased his continued evolution as he was named a permanent team captain and defensive signal-caller, amassing 76 tackles (including 6.5 for loss) and two sacks in just ten games before suffering a season-ending lower-extremity injury against Oklahoma that required surgery.

Rather than entering the 2025 NFL Draft, Lawson made the pivotal decision to return for his fifth season at Alabama. During his Crimson Tide career, he's accumulated 194 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, 5 sacks, and 12 pass deflections across four seasons. Lawson enters the 2025 season as the emotional centerpiece of Alabama's defense under new head coach Kalen DeBoer, who has praised the linebacker's leadership qualities and work ethic during rehabilitation, setting up what could be a defining final chapter before transitioning to the NFL.
Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Alpha communicator who commanded Alabama's defense with the green dot, making pre-snap adjustments and aligning teammates with veteran savvy and controlled urgency.
  • Shows advanced processing skills at the second level - demonstrates excellent patience before firing downhill, rarely overcommitting to false reads that leave cutback lanes exposed.
  • Packs serious punch as a tackler when he squares up, generating impressive stopping power through his hips and consistently driving ball carriers backward on contact.
  • Displays sophisticated hand usage against climbing linemen, employing swim moves, two-handed swipes and push-pulls that create quick separation in traffic.
  • Zone coverage instincts flash NFL-level awareness - keeps head on a swivel identifying multiple threats while reading quarterback intentions to squeeze throwing windows.
  • Runs downhill with legitimate purpose and explosiveness - consistently beats offensive linemen to their landmarks, disrupting blocking schemes before they develop.
  • Flashes surprising pass rush upside on designed blitzes, converting speed to power and showing natural timing when attacking interior gaps and working half-man relationships.
  • High-floor defender with extensive special teams value across all units, showing the same competitive intensity covering kicks as he does manning the middle of Alabama's defense.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • Lacks ideal length and power at point of attack - gets swallowed up too often when offensive linemen establish clean body position and get their hands inside his frame.
  • Medical flags require serious vetting - suffered significant lower-body injury in 2024 requiring surgery and has missed multiple games with ankle issues in previous seasons.
  • Displays concerning athletic limitations in space - lacks true sideline-to-sideline range and gets exposed when forced to redirect against elusive ball carriers in open field.
  • Struggles deciphering complex route combinations when dropping into coverage, occasionally getting suckered by quarterback eye manipulation and play-action fakes.
  • Block shedding consistency remains frustrating - flashes techniques to defeat blockers but lacks the lower body power to consistently disengage once offensive linemen lock on.
Scouting Report: Summary
When I study Lawson's tape, I see a blue-chip linebacker prospect whose combination of instincts and physicality will make him an immediate impact player on Sundays. His exceptional run defense grade jumps off the screen - the Alabama captain consistently anticipates blocking schemes and triggers downhill with controlled violence. Teams running single-gap 4-3 schemes will covet his ability to stack, shed and flow to the football. First round linebackers need to be three-down players in today's NFL, and while Lawson isn't elite in man coverage, his zone awareness and ability to close passing lanes in the intermediate areas will keep him on the field in sub-packages where his communication skills shine.

The medical evaluation remains the final hurdle after the significant lower-body injury that ended his 2024 campaign, but assuming full clearance, we're looking at a Day 1 contributor with Pro Bowl upside. What separates Lawson from other linebacker prospects in this class is his rare diagnostic ability - he processes information faster than most veterans, allowing him to play a step ahead of blockers. When you combine those football instincts with his physical tackling style and leadership qualities, you get a defensive cornerstone who can transform the identity of a front seven. His fifth-year return to Alabama showed both competitive fire and professional maturity that will have defensive coordinators pounding the table in draft meetings.

Lawson reminds me of Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah with better size - a rangy, instinctive linebacker who thrives in space while maintaining the physicality to hold up against interior run schemes. Teams picking in the mid-to-late first round looking for defensive leadership should have Lawson circled on their board. This is the kind of prospect who becomes the heartbeat of your defense from day one while developing into a defensive signal-caller who contributes 100+ tackle seasons for the next decade. Expect to hear his name called within the first 25 picks and don't be surprised when he's wearing a green dot as a rookie starter for a playoff-caliber defense.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance. For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
