Scouting Report: Strengths
- VanSumeren has good movement skills with decent range. And VanSumeren proved capable of holding up in zone coverage and can be used as an effective A-gap blitzer.
- Brings down quarterbacks much bigger than he is. Very good motor and regularly chases down plays from behind.
- He can be used as a rangy run defender inside, instinctive when it comes to locating the ball with the quickness to get to it before blockers can react at the second level.
- Quick to read run, showing good agility and speed to get past blockers and finish. Experienced in coverage and gets a strong jam on outside receivers.
- Accelerates rapidly and has a great feel for angles. He isn’t huge, but he packs a pop.
- VanSumeren has good reaction skills and awareness. Forceful tackler vs. the run.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Doesn’t play with a physical edge. VanSumeren too often wants to run around the edge, and VanSumeren has trouble disengaging when an offensive lineman can get into his frame.
- Plays too high when trying to set the edge. His motor is inconsistent.
- As a run defender, he’s too much of a grab-and-drag tackler, lacking violence and too frequently allowing running backs to escape.
