However, some players don’t fit this mould, and they captivate fans due to their personality and showmanship. These types of players are usually the ones you see in the big viral highlight reel moments on social media.

From in-game heroics to wild celebrations, the most entertaining players have left their mark in NFL history. This list ranks some of those players who combine excellence and entertainment.

Chad Johnson

Chad Johnson, who later changed his name to Chad Ochocinco, is the perfect example of someone who embodies elite ability and entertainment value. The wide receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals, Johnson, was a six-time Pro Bowler. Known for his route running and playmaking, but his personality is what made him a fan favourite.

Johnson turned the touchdown celebration into an art form, from proposing to a cheerleader to using his pylon as a putter; his celebration antics became a thing of legend. Johnson embodied someone who loved the entertainment aspect of the sport, and this made him such an iconic player.

Patrick Mahomes

Patrick Mahomes is one of the most recognisable names in the NFL today, with his dominance and ability to create highlights seemingly out of nowhere. In 2018, Mahomes became the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, and he instantly made an impact on fans. Mahomes’ style was night and day different from the likes of Tom Brady, who was very no-nonsense. Mahomes would attempt no-look passes and often throw 70-yard passes for fun. His incredible vision and arm strength allow him to make plays that other quarterbacks can only dream of making.

Mahomes is not just all show; however, he is one of the best players in the league currently, and his achievements back that up. In 2023, he led the Chiefs to another Super Bowl victory. As well as team achievements, Mahomes has had multiple MVP honours to his name. 

Marshawn Lynch

With the nickname “Beast Mode,” Marshawn Lynch was a force to be reckoned with during his time in the NFL. Formerly playing for the Seattle Seahawks and Las Vegas Raiders, Marshawn Lynch was well known for his brute force and unfiltered personality. This combination of force and personality made him one of the most beloved players in the league. As a player, he was unstoppable for the most part; his runs were violent and relentless. His legendary “Beast Quake” run against the New Orleans Saints in the 2010 playoffs remains one of the most iconic moments in NFL history.

Off the field, Lynch was a cult hero amongst fans. Whether it was his famous line of “I’m just here so I won’t get fined” at media day or handing out Skittles on the sidelines. Lynch’s authenticity made him a hit with fans.

Travis Kelce

Travis Kelce is truly the life of the party, with his infectious personality, flashy style, and incredible connection with teammate Patrick Mahomes. Kelce is equally entertaining both on and off the field. From his post-match interviews to touchdown celebrations, Kelce brings a unique energy that we have not seen for many years, and this has catapulted him into stardom. You can tell that he loves being in the spotlight, and his incredible ability finds him there very frequently.

On the field, Kelce holds multiple records as a tight end and has been a mainstay in the Chiefs' offensive lineup. His charisma and creativity have made him one of the NFL’s most popular and marketable athletes.

Cam Newton

Cam Newton redefined what it meant to be a quarterback. He brought size, power, and athleticism to the position like no one else before him. He did not have to rely on his ability to throw; he was capable of running the line and avoiding tackles from the defence. Just because he could run doesn’t mean he couldn’t throw, however. He had immense arm strength and could pick out a pass as good as anyone else. His ability on the pitch meant we often saw him doing his trademark Superman celebration.

Not only was he technically gifted, but Newton also brought confidence to the field. He influenced both his teammates and the crowd with his leadership. He took the Caroline Panthers from an ‘ok’ team to a ‘must-watch’ team. Newton wasn’t just a quarterback; he was an entertainer in his purest form.
