Scouting Report: Strengths
- Stays low in his backpedal and shows the click-and-close ability to break up plays in front of him. Mayes can move well laterally and shows excellent instincts when looking into the backfield in zone coverage.
- Tracks the ball well and has the natural ball skills for forcing turnovers.
- Good instincts and anticipation reads and reacts with discipline. Dangerous with the ball in his hands.
- Has the quick feet to mirror receivers underneath. He also has the fluid hips and top-end speed to turn and run downfield. He shows good awareness when dropping into zone coverage, with good route recognition and the ability to break quickly and cover a lot of ground.
- Can get up on the line of scrimmage and deliver a solid punch early in routes, then use that quickness to shadow, or back off and close quickly when the ball comes out
- Effective out of the slot, showing the instincts and quickness to mirror when the receiver has a two-way go. Mayes has good instincts and awareness when playing off, showing good route recognition and anticipation when breaking on the ball.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Isn’t great in route recognition when he’s facing the action, is hesitant and susceptible to double moves, and too often gets unnecessarily handsy when playing trail position
- Susceptible to the big plays as a gambler at the catch point and as a catch-and-run victim. He’s also too reluctant to come up and make hits in run support, often focusing on the strip more than the tackle.
- Feet aren’t ideal, as Mayes gets sloppy in his backpedal and can be sluggish when transitioning to close on the ball.
