The receiver group was pieced together; Antonio Brown was on the team for one game, an opener in which he caught four passes before being released after a sexual assault lawsuit and a series of escalating off-field incidents. Tom Brady threw for 4,057 yards on 6.6 yards per attempt, his worst since 2002.

The wild-card round at home against Tennessee was a 20-13 loss in which the Patriots offense managed 13 points and Brady's final pass was a pick-six on the game's last meaningful play. He left the franchise in March on a two-year deal with Tampa Bay. The defense had been the league's best in points allowed; the offense was the reason the run ended.
