FutureB
The Bears finally solved quarterback, and it carried them to a D. You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Bears did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.
Whatever Caleb Williams becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
They are betting Legette proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Caleb Williams
In No. 1 they get their quarterback of the future. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick16
Rnd1
Adonai Mitchell
In the Round 1 slot they get a home-run threat at receiver, though they paid up to get him. A real need, handled.
Pick45
Rnd2
Darius Robinson
Darius Robinson slid further than he should have, and pick 45 is lovely value for the edge rusher. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick51
Rnd2
Xavier Legette
Xavier Legette at pick No. 51 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It fills a real need, too.
Pick75
Rnd3
Sedrick Van Pran
A straight-up fair deal on Sedrick Van Pran at the 75th pick, value and slot in agreement. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick81
Rnd3
Calen Bullock
Nothing to complain about; Calen Bullock went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick111
Rnd4
Javon Foster
The board had cheaper options than Javon Foster at the 111th overall pick, and it noticed. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick123
Rnd4
Josh Newton
They paid sticker price for Josh Newton in slot 123, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
