Williams is the plan now, and the 49ers grade out a F. The phones were a trap the 49ers kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. A F, plain and simple.
The cost of the Braswell reach is exactly the players who went right after him. Whatever Caleb Williams becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. For all the activity, running back went untouched, which is hard to explain.
They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
There is no soft landing here: they fought the board and left running back open, and the grade is the bill.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Caleb Williams
In the Round 1 slot they get their quarterback of the future. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick2
Rnd1
Marvin Harrison Jr.
In pick 2 they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick3
Rnd1
Brock Bowers
In pick No. 3 they get a matchup weapon at tight end. A real need, handled.
Pick4
Rnd1
Joe Alt
In Round 1, Pick 4 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick5
Rnd1
Laiatu Latu
In the 5th pick they get a problem off the edge.
Pick9
Rnd1
Cooper DeJean
In slot 9 they get a sticky cover corner at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick32
Rnd1
Chris Braswell
Chris Braswell at the 32nd overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The roster fit checks out.
