You can hear the double-takes from here. The Cardinals took TreVeyon Henderson at the Round 1 slot, roughly 82 spots before his name belonged. It lands right in the middle: a C, no more, no less.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Frazier. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Hit on TreVeyon Henderson and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 3 they get a three-down runner, though the board says they badly overpaid. A clean fit for the roster.
In the 17th pick they get a green-dot type in the middle, a steep price for the projection.
Jackson Powers-Johnson at No. 35 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A top-tier edge rusher at a bargain, Chris Braswell in pick 67, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Javon Foster in the Round 3 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Jermaine Burton slid further than he should have, and the 81st overall pick is lovely value for the wide receiver. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A interior defensive lineman of that caliber at the Round 4 slot is the definition of value, full stop. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and AJ Barner at Round 4, Pick 33 is the proof. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Value with a capital V on Tykee Smith in the 140th pick, a genuine coup. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Zach Frazier at pick 165 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Steal is underselling it; Connor Colby at pick No. 198 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
You do not let an offensive lineman like Gerald Mincey reach slot 224 and blink. They did not. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Taking Gerald Mincey in the 227th overall pick is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
