The phones were a trap the Vikings kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal.
The whole projection now runs through Drake Maye; hit there and everything else looks smarter. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up. Every board in the league had Powell-Ryland lower, and that gap is the story.
The Gray value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and wide receiver is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 5 they get the arm they will build around. The biggest hole, addressed.
Troy Fautanu in the 37th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They liked T'Vondre Sweat enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 42. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Donovan Edwards at pick No. 108 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It fills a real need, too.
A quiet steal in the Round 4 slot: Cedric Gray for less than the market said. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Mike Sainristil. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They did well to land Josh Proctor in the 179th pick, just ahead of his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Antwaun Powell-Ryland at Round 7, Pick 10 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
