After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Vikings committed. Caleb Williams is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline.
Getting Devonshire where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
No edge and no loss on Caleb Williams in pick 2; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Andru Phillips is a better player than pick No. 108 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Nothing to complain about; James Williams went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A tidy bit of business in the Round 5 slot, where Trevor Keegan graded well above the range. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Steal is underselling it; Jacob Cowing at No. 167 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Taking Isaiah Davis in Round 6, Pick 2 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. A need, and now a little less of one.
The board fumbled M.J. Devonshire all the way to the 230th pick, and they scooped it up. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Somehow Curtis Jacobs was still sitting there in slot 232, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
