You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Vikings did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. It grades a D, and the process earned it.
Reaching for Keegan left real value on the table behind him. The Jackson pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with tight end still on the board.
The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Vikings clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.

In slot 17 they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
R1.20
· Pick 20
· Jared Verse
· DE-EDGE
· rank 16
In the 20th overall pick they get juice off the edge. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.10
· Pick 42
· Quinyon Mitchell
· CB
· rank 31
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Quinyon Mitchell at pick No. 42. A minor itch, scratched.
R2.16
· Pick 48
· Jackson Powers-Johnson
· C
· rank 51
By-the-book stuff, Jackson Powers-Johnson at the Round 2 slot squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R2.21
· Pick 53
· Brenden Rice
· WR
· rank 67
A premium they did not need to pay, Brenden Rice a notch or two before his time. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R3.20
· Pick 84
· Spencer Rattler
· QB
· rank 90
No edge and no loss on Spencer Rattler in Round 3, Pick 20; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.33
· Pick 96
· Audric Estime
· RB
· rank 97
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Audric Estime. The roster fit checks out.
R4.9
· Pick 109
· Khyree Jackson
· CB
· rank 105
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending No. 109 on Khyree Jackson with tight end unsolved.
R5.21
· Pick 157
· Khristian Boyd
· DL-EDGE
· rank 161
A straight-up fair deal on Khristian Boyd at Round 5, Pick 21, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R5.30
· Pick 166
· Kitan Oladapo
· S
· rank 170
They took Kitan Oladapo at par in No. 166, which is nothing to complain about. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R6.4
· Pick 179
· Jordan Jefferson
· DT
· rank 187
Jordan Jefferson in the 179th pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R6.23
· Pick 198
· Michael Barrett
· LB
· rank 189
Michael Barrett at pick 198 is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R7.7
· Pick 227
· Trevor Keegan
· OG
· rank 251
Trevor Keegan in slot 227 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
