You build a draft on nights like this. Malachi Corley had no business being available in the 108th pick, and the Vikings did the only sane thing and turned in the card. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
It is not that Mitchell is a bad player; it is that the Vikings had louder needs to answer first. The safety hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
They are betting Jones proves the room right and everyone else wrong. They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made.
Good work on the whole, with safety the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 15 they get a double-digit-sack hope. The biggest hole, addressed.
They barely believed it either: Nate Wiggins still on the board at the 42nd pick. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A want over a need in No. 46: Quinyon Mitchell adds a cornerback while safety and interior defensive lineman keeps waiting.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Malachi Corley in Round 4, Pick 8, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
MarShawn Lloyd at the Round 4 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A straight-up fair deal on Keith Randolph Jr. at pick 148, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No drama and no debate, Joe Milton III went about where he belonged in the 160th overall pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A premium they did not need to pay, Jaylan Ford a notch or two before his time. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Trey Knox at pick 179 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Matthew Jones at the 230th overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They jumped the gun on Maurice Smith, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
