You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Eagles did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. The math is unkind, and the D follows.
With interior defensive lineman and quarterback unsolved, spending premium capital on linebacker is the choice that costs them. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Williams.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 22 they get an island corner at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In Round 1, Pick 28 they get a blindside protector. A real need, handled.
Kamren Kinchens is a better player than the 50th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The roster fit checks out.
Chris Braswell at the Round 2 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Good price on Adisa Isaac in pick 65, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Brenden Rice in slot 68 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Junior Colson. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Blake Corum at pick 76 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Marist Liufau adds a linebacker and leaves interior defensive lineman and quarterback untouched.
A straight-up fair deal on Tykee Smith at the 97th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Fair-plus on Kris Abrams-Draine, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
By-the-book stuff, Isaiah Adams at the Round 4 slot squarely in line with his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Malik Washington slipping to No. 128 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jarrian Jones in pick No. 137. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They took Jaheim Bell at par in pick No. 138, which is nothing to complain about. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Beaux Limmer in slot 139 is fair value, right on his grade. It fills a real need, too.
The board had Ty'Ron Hopper higher than the Round 5 slot, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Miyan Williams in the 224th overall pick, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jha'Quan Jackson in the 232nd pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They barely believed it either: Myles Jones still on the board at pick 233. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Value with a capital V on Steele Chambers in No. 239, a genuine coup. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Jeremy Flax at Round 7, Pick 28 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
