The jury is out on the Cowboys. For now, C+. The Cowboys spent real capital to be 77 picks early on Alfred Collins, and the board is going to hold them to it. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C+.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Allar. With wide receiver, linebacker and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on edge rusher is the choice that costs them.
A whole weekend of picks and wide receiver is somehow still a want.
Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.
Pick Analysis
Pick33
Rnd2
Landon Jackson
Landon Jackson at No. 33 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick44
Rnd2
Abdul Carter
Of all the spots to shop, they chose edge rusher. Abdul Carter in pick No. 44 leaves wide receiver, linebacker and other spots for later.
Pick54
Rnd2
Josaiah Stewart
A curious use of pick 54. Wide receiver, linebacker and other spots needed the pick; an edge rusher in Josaiah Stewart did not.
Pick57
Rnd2
Kaleb Johnson
A reasonable price with a little left over, Kaleb Johnson in the 57th overall pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick118
Rnd4
Logan Brown
Logan Brown at slot 118 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick151
Rnd5
Alfred Collins
A wild overpay on Alfred Collins in the 151st pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The roster fit checks out.
Pick155
Rnd5
Jonah Coleman
A conviction pick on Jonah Coleman at Round 5, Pick 17 that the board grades a round light. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick169
Rnd5
Jaxson Dart
They will replay Jaxson Dart at slot 169 for years; that is how good the value is. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick170
Rnd5
Elijah Roberts
Elijah Roberts in the 170th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick171
Rnd5
Hunter Wohler
They reached a country mile for Hunter Wohler at pick 171, and the board is aghast. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick172
Rnd5
Davison Igbinosun
Davison Igbinosun at the Round 5 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick180
Rnd6
Drew Allar
A quarterback of that caliber at No. 180 is the definition of value, full stop. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick188
Rnd6
Jamaree Caldwell
They talked themselves into Jamaree Caldwell at pick No. 188, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
