Draft Grade — Steelers

FutureB
Nobody dealt better than the Steelers this weekend: B. The real work happened on the phones. The Steelers fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with.
Spending an early pick on DT-EDGE with interior defensive lineman, safety and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
They will need Nugent to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick33
Rnd2
Xavier Legette
Xavier Legette at the Round 2 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick52
Rnd2
Edgerrin Cooper
They took Edgerrin Cooper at par in the 52nd pick, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
Pick65
Rnd3
Caelen Carson
A straight-up fair deal on Caelen Carson at pick 65, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick84
Rnd3
Maason Smith
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Maason Smith at DT-EDGE with interior defensive lineman, safety and other spots open.
Pick119
Rnd4
DJ James
DJ James at No. 119 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick137
Rnd5
Drake Nugent
Drake Nugent in slot 137 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick172
Rnd5
Joe Milton III
A tidy bit of business in Round 5, Pick 36, where Joe Milton III graded well above the range. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick198
Rnd6
Rasheen Ali
By-the-book stuff, Rasheen Ali at pick No. 198 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick241
Rnd7
Aaron Frost
A conviction pick on Aaron Frost at pick 241 that the board grades a round light. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
