Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall
D-

FutureB
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Cowboys to a D-. The Cowboys did not so much draft Trevin Wallace as overpay for him, 42 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. It grades a D-, and the process earned it.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The Kamara pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with wide receiver, quarterback and other spots still on the board.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up. Landing Brooks that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, wide receiver very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick8
Rnd1
Jared Verse
Jared Verse in pick 8 is fair value, right on his grade. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick27
Rnd1
Troy Fautanu
In the 27th pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick43
Rnd2
Zach Frazier
A premium they did not need to pay, Zach Frazier a notch or two before his time. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick56
Rnd2
Jonathon Brooks
Jonathon Brooks slid further than he should have, and Round 2, Pick 24 is lovely value for the running back. The roster fit checks out.
Pick87
Rnd3
Khyree Jackson
They paid a round early for Khyree Jackson in the Round 3 slot, more than the board wanted. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick90
Rnd3
Mohamed Kamara
A curious use of the 90th overall pick. Wide receiver, quarterback and other spots needed the pick; an edge rusher in Mohamed Kamara did not.
Pick109
Rnd4
Trevin Wallace
Trevin Wallace at pick No. 109 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick174
Rnd5
Fabien Lovett
Fabien Lovett in Round 5, Pick 38 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick216
Rnd6
Jase McClellan
Jase McClellan at No. 216 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick233
Rnd7
JD Bertrand
Quietly one of the better values of the day, JD Bertrand at the 233rd pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick244
Rnd7
Evan Anderson
They reached into another round for Evan Anderson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
