FutureA
The Cowboys found their guy under center in Penix Jr.: D+. Somebody took the Cowboys to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it. The math is unkind, and the D+ follows.
The whole projection now runs through Michael Penix Jr.; hit there and everything else looks smarter. The cost of the Byrd reach is exactly the players who went right after him. Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Flournoy.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick Analysis
Pick10
Rnd1
Michael Penix Jr.
In the 10th overall pick they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick24
Rnd1
Olumuyiwa Fashanu
In pick 24 they get a blindside protector, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick56
Rnd2
DJ James
Fair-plus on DJ James, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick87
Rnd3
Gabriel Murphy
Gabriel Murphy at Round 3, Pick 24 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick115
Rnd4
Cedric Gray
Cedric Gray in pick No. 115 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick135
Rnd4
Isaac Guerendo
Good price on Isaac Guerendo in slot 135, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick174
Rnd5
Luke McCaffrey
They barely believed it either: Luke McCaffrey still on the board at No. 174. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick194
Rnd6
Layden Robinson
A offensive lineman of that caliber at the 194th pick is the definition of value, full stop. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick216
Rnd6
Kendall Milton
They read the board right and Kendall Milton was the payoff at pick 216. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick233
Rnd7
Ryan Flournoy
They robbed the room for Ryan Flournoy here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick244
Rnd7
Solomon Byrd
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Solomon Byrd. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
