The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Raiders spent their marquee pick on J.J. McCarthy, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback.
If McCarthy pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Speights.
For all the activity, wide receiver went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Good work on the whole, with wide receiver the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 21 they get the face of the franchise, a steep price for the projection. A real need, handled.
Fair-plus on Tyler Guyton, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No edge and no loss on T'Vondre Sweat in Round 2, Pick 21; it is a wash and a sensible one. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Trey Benson at pick 77 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
By-the-book stuff, Beau Brade at the Round 4 slot squarely in line with his ranking. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Kamal Hadden slipping to the 150th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Value with a capital V on Javion Cohen in slot 158, a genuine coup. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They liked Jaylen Harrell enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 190. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
You do not let a linebacker like Omar Speights reach Round 7, Pick 14 and blink. They did not. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
