McCarthy is the Bears' new face under center. Grade: B+. Start where it matters. The Bears took J.J. McCarthy to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. Good, not great, and the B+ says as much.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.
The cost of the McCarthy reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Marvin Harrison Jr.
In pick No. 1 they get a go-to option on the outside. A real need, handled.
Pick22
Rnd1
J.J. McCarthy
In the 22nd pick they get a passer to set the clock by, though the board says they badly overpaid. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick75
Rnd3
Sedrick Van Pran
Sedrick Van Pran at pick 75 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick110
Rnd4
Nelson Ceaser
No drama and no debate, Nelson Ceaser went about where he belonged in Round 4, Pick 10. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick122
Rnd4
DJ James
Nice patience on DJ James, who had no business lasting to No. 122. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick146
Rnd5
Austin Booker
A premium they did not need to pay, Austin Booker a notch or two before his time. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
