Gill DRAFTING FOR THE49ers

Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall

FutureB-
The steal of the weekend belongs to the 49ers and Smith-Wade: B-. Thirty-one other rooms let Chau Smith-Wade slide, and the 49ers were the ones holding the card at No. 252. Highway robbery. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
Reaching for Rice left real value on the table behind him. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They left with offensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Taliese Fuaga
A reasonable price with a little left over, Taliese Fuaga in No. 31. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick63
Rnd2
Brian Thomas Jr.
Brian Thomas Jr. slid further than he should have, and the Round 2 slot is lovely value for the wide receiver. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick94
Rnd3
Braelon Allen
Braelon Allen in slot 94 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick98
Rnd3
Brenden Rice
Brenden Rice at Round 3, Pick 35 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick131
Rnd4
Khyree Jackson
A clean, defensible pick in pick 131 with a little surplus value in Khyree Jackson. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick177
Rnd6
Andrew Raym
No drama and no debate, Andrew Raym went about where he belonged in pick No. 177. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick209
Rnd6
Nelson Ceaser
Nelson Ceaser at the 209th overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick213
Rnd6
Jaylon Carlies
They jumped the gun on Jaylon Carlies, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick215
Rnd6
Duce Chestnut
Duce Chestnut at the Round 6 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick252
Rnd7
Chau Smith-Wade
Chau Smith-Wade at the 252nd pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
