FutureA+
The 49ers lost the trade table, and the C+ tells the story. The war room fell hard for Frank Gore Jr., and it showed at pick 182: 41 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. A weekend of give and take that grades a C+.
The Harden pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
Offensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
A perfectly average weekend, for better and for worse.
Pick Analysis
Pick94
Rnd3
Brenden Rice
They paid sticker price for Brenden Rice in pick 94, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick114
Rnd4
Matt Goncalves
Matt Goncalves at pick No. 114 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick125
Rnd4
Isaiah Adams
By-the-book stuff, Isaiah Adams at No. 125 squarely in line with his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick182
Rnd6
Frank Gore Jr.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Frank Gore Jr. well ahead of where he belonged. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick209
Rnd6
Johnny Dixon
Johnny Dixon at the Round 6 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick214
Rnd6
Myles Harden
Circle this one: Myles Harden at slot 214 is a fall that decides a draft. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick215
Rnd6
Nathan Thomas
A slide stopped in the Round 6 slot, with Nathan Thomas worth more than the price. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick219
Rnd6
Gabe Hall
Good price on Gabe Hall in slot 219, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick249
Rnd7
Jowon Briggs
The board had Jowon Briggs higher than pick 249, and the DT-EDGE fell to them anyway. The roster logic is harder to follow.
Pick254
Rnd7
Ryan Cooper Jr.
Ryan Cooper Jr. at pick No. 254 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick257
Rnd7
Sheridan Jones
They robbed the room for Sheridan Jones here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
