The phones were a trap the Vikings kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal.
Leaving offensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Every board in the league had Cooper lower, and that gap is the story. The Robinson pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
In the end, a class that has to defy its grades just to matter.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 20 they get a run-stuffing presence up front at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
They took Keon Coleman at par in slot 21, which is nothing to complain about. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
In the 23rd overall pick they get an island corner. Need was not the driver here.
Brian Thomas Jr. in the Round 1 slot is fair value, right on his grade. It fills a real need, too.
A straight-up fair deal on Xavier Legette at pick 34, value and slot in agreement. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
The board had Tyler Nubin higher than No. 38, and the safety fell to them anyway. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
J.J. McCarthy at Round 2, Pick 10 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Edgerrin Cooper at the 43rd pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They liked Adisa Isaac enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 2, Pick 16. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A tidy bit of business in pick 52, where Chop Robinson graded well above the range. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
T'Vondre Sweat at No. 70 is money in the bank, a interior defensive lineman taken below his worth. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
