Larceny in No. 215 lands the 49ers a D, McGlothern and all. The trade table was where it all came apart. The 49ers shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is McGlothern. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Malik Nabers
In pick No. 4 they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick31
Rnd1
Amarius Mims
In slot 31 they get a long-term starter on the line at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick63
Rnd2
Payton Wilson
Payton Wilson at the 63rd overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The roster fit checks out.
Pick94
Rnd3
Max Melton
Max Melton in Round 3, Pick 31 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick125
Rnd4
James Williams
Nothing to complain about; James Williams went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick132
Rnd4
Mohamed Kamara
A reasonable price with a little left over, Mohamed Kamara in the Round 4 slot. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick176
Rnd6
AJ Barner
Nice patience on AJ Barner, who had no business lasting to pick 176. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick209
Rnd6
Cornelius Johnson
Cornelius Johnson in Round 6, Pick 34 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick214
Rnd6
Kendall Milton
A running back of that caliber at the Round 6 slot is the definition of value, full stop. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick215
Rnd6
Dwight McGlothern
Dwight McGlothern at the 215th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick249
Rnd7
Evan Williams
A tidy little value on Evan Williams in No. 249, a step better than break-even. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
